grisaille

  • Painted in situ, private residence (Scottish Highlands) with Rosalind Begbie for Bone Black ltd (2018)
  • Distemper on paper, part of a series of panels painted with Rosalind Begbie under direction from Alasdair Peebles for Rima & McRae ltd (2016), installed in private residence in Belgravia, London

Grisaille is a traditional method of painting landscape in monochrome or sepia tones, originally designed to be captured by candlelight. Whether carried out in layers of acrylic glazes or distemper, the cumulative effect of many translucent layers of working results in soft, complex imagery that can be tailored to the light conditions of the room.
